Basic Power Tools - 3 Power Tool For Woodworking

If your just getting into woodworking and don't know which basic power tools to add to your arsenal for starters then your at a place most beginners find themselves. I know I did.

There are 3 power tools I wouldn't be without from my collection. While some tools are nice to have and make life easier at times they may not be classed as essential.

A lot of basic tools are normally held by most households and a good set of hand tools will always be utilized with your woodworking projects. Good tools are not cheap but the old saying that you get what you pay for is definitely true.

If you go too cheap with things like screwdrivers etc you will find they are just soft mild steel and the driver head will self destruct in no time. So go with the best you can afford.

Back to basic power tools I wouldn't be without, the same basic premise applies here "you get what you pay for" so get the best your budget will afford. You will be glad you did in the long run.

1. Power Drill

Come in both cordless and corded and while cordless drills are more convenient they don't have the power that is produced by their corded equivalent. Most corded drills have variable speed controls, allowing you to adjust the RPM's depending on the material you are drilling.

2. Jigsaw

Much needed in my workshop the jigsaw can be used to cut a whole host of different materials, with different blades and can cut all sorts of shapes too. Also available with variable speeds and quick change blade systems.

3. Circular Saw

Although this power tool has the ability to detach you from your extremities I wouldn't be without it. You can rip your lumber in a matter of seconds with this. Some beginners find it takes a little time to get the hang of but well worth getting to know. Just be careful!

Obviously there are other tools that you will need to add to your toolbox in time. Things like Orbital sander, Router, Compound Mitre Saw are all handy things to have and on the hand tool front Chisels, Clamps, Mallets etc. But the above basic power tools will get you started and get most jobs done.
