It's extremely dangerous to watch someone else operate a tool
incorrectly. Let me tell you why, whenever someone else is using a power
tool incorrectly and the observer of this event doesn't know that
they're using it incorrectly, they will usually operate the tool, the
same way.
If this doesn't make sense to you, I would like you to
take a look at how you learned to do almost everything that you do
today. How did you learn to eat? Was it by watching other people eat or
by trial and error? How did you learn how to write or read? This should
be starting to make more sense to you now, most people learn by watching
other people.
So the next time you see someone operating a tool
incorrectly, you should explain this to them. Explain to them that
they're not doing anyone any favors, including themselves. By operating
tools in the wrong manner, you're putting your life and those around you
at risk.
Something else that I would like to point out to people
that yell a lot. Whenever you see someone operating a power tool
incorrectly don't yell or scream at them and you shouldn't ever tap them
on the shoulder or bump into them. Things like these cause power tool
accidents and should be avoided.
The biggest problem with people
using power tools and safety in general, is that most people don't know
or understand that their lives are in jeopardy. Once you explain power
tool safety to them, you're probably going to have an advocate instead
of an enemy.

Basic Power Tools - 3 Power Tool For Woodworking
If
your just getting into woodworking and don't know which basic power
tools to add to your arsenal for starters then your at a place most
beginners find themselves. I know I did.
There are 3 power tools I wouldn't be without from my collection. While some tools are nice to have and make life easier at times they may not be classed as essential.
A lot of basic tools are normally held by most households and a good set of hand tools will always be utilized with your woodworking projects. Good tools are not cheap but the old saying that you get what you pay for is definitely true.
If you go too cheap with things like screwdrivers etc you will find they are just soft mild steel and the driver head will self destruct in no time. So go with the best you can afford.
Back to basic power tools I wouldn't be without, the same basic premise applies here "you get what you pay for" so get the best your budget will afford. You will be glad you did in the long run.
1. Power Drill
Come in both cordless and corded and while cordless drills are more convenient they don't have the power that is produced by their corded equivalent. Most corded drills have variable speed controls, allowing you to adjust the RPM's depending on the material you are drilling.
2. Jigsaw
Much needed in my workshop the jigsaw can be used to cut a whole host of different materials, with different blades and can cut all sorts of shapes too. Also available with variable speeds and quick change blade systems.
3. Circular Saw
Although this power tool has the ability to detach you from your extremities I wouldn't be without it. You can rip your lumber in a matter of seconds with this. Some beginners find it takes a little time to get the hang of but well worth getting to know. Just be careful!
Obviously there are other tools that you will need to add to your toolbox in time. Things like Orbital sander, Router, Compound Mitre Saw are all handy things to have and on the hand tool front Chisels, Clamps, Mallets etc. But the above basic power tools will get you started and get most jobs done.

Combination Kits For Power Tools
One way to get the appropriate tools you need for work or repairs is
with power tools combo kits. Popular manufacturers like Makita, Hitachi,
and Bostitch all make such kits that, for an amateur, may serve as an
introduction to basic power tools and, for a professional, provide all
of the necessary tools for the job. When choosing a kit, however,
determine your needs of the job or work before purchasing one. As such
combination kits can have two to seven tools with a carrying case, some
in a set may be superfluous to the work. Additionally, sets are often
grouped by electric and cordless tools and know the needs of the job, as
well, before purchasing a set of either type.
In general, combo kits are geared toward professionals and their basic needs on a job. Although construction, automotive, and contracting jobs can vary, certain tools are always staples for each line of work. Manufacturers Makita and Bostitch, in particular, have created combo kits for various professions, including automotive workers, tradesmen, and electricians. The power tools in these kits often have appropriate strengths needed for the most common tasks. Similarly, kits with nailers and staplers, with a compressor and bits, are put together by such manufacturers for those that need these tools on the job.
Not all kits are geared toward professionals, however. Many of the general and contractors kits have basic power tools for the amateur who wants to do projects and repairs around the home. Many of these combination kits include two to four tools, such as reciprocating and circular saws and a two-in-one tool like a hammer drill. Nevertheless, when using such kits, keep in mind your safety. These kits do not come with eye or hearing protection and anyone, including amateurs, should have ear plugs and safety glasses around the home or workspace for using such power tools.

The Power of Safety With Power Tools
When it comes to Do It Yourself type jobs around the house, power tools
are both a blessing and a potential curse. The key point in that
previous sentence is "potential", because there doesn't need to be a
downside to them. The key is to know how to use them properly and to
never let your guard down or get complacent of over confident while
using them. If you don't focus and treat power tools with respect 100%
of the time, you're just asking for trouble. Maybe not today and maybe
not tomorrow, but eventually fate has a way of catching up with you. So
why tempt fate? Just get familiar with your power tools and the right
way to use them and keep a sharp eye and a sharp mind while using them
and you can have a long lived love affair with your tools while also
keeping all your fingers, toes and other appendages.
Let's take a look at a number of specific safety issues you should always keep in mind to keep you, and anyone working around you, safe.
Safety Goggles or Glasses - Your eyes deserve the highest degree of caution and protection when working with power tools or chemicals. After all, if you lose a finger, you have 9 more. If you lose an eye, you've lost HALF your vision! It's just not worth taking the risk. Make sure you get good quality safety glasses that properly cover your eyes to protect you from dust and debris, wood and metal shavings, fiberglass particles or chemical splashes.
Ear Protection - If you plan on doing a lot of work with power tools, you need to protect your ears. Power tools generate a lot of noise, and even though you might think it's not a big deal, continued exposure to such loud noises will eventually take its toll on your hearing. If you don't want to get the full on ear muffs, getting some simple, inexpensive ear plugs will be enough to protect you.
Know Your Tools - Know what your tools are designed to do, and know what kind of tool you need for the job at hand. If the two don't match, don't try to 'wing it' and make it work. Having the right tool for the right job makes things much easier all around. And while it's understandable that you might not have the perfect tool each time, trying to 'wing it' may well cost you more in time and aggravation than either getting the right tool (purchased, rented or borrowed), or doing the job manually (God forbid!) And of course the biggest danger when using a tool outside of its scope of work is that you may well put yourself in danger by doing so. So don't do it.
The three very basic safety guidelines outlined above are simple, yet if you make sure you follow them, you will have a much lower likelihood of finding yourself in the emergency room WISHING you had followed such simple steps. It may be a cliché, but clichés typically come about because they actually have a lot of merit behind their message. So don't forget this one: "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."

Fein Power Tools - How to Increase the Lifespan of Your Fein Multimaster Blades
The Fein Multimaster is one of the best multipurpose power tools on the
market, but many people find that Fein Multimaster blades are fragile
and wear out very quickly. Even owners of rivals to Fein power tools,
like the Bosch Multi-X, Rockwell Sonicrafter, and Dremel Multi-Max have
the same complaint. The problem seems to be a side-effect of the special
technology which gives these power tools their ability to make
precisely controlled cuts.
The use of a special oscillating motor to vibrate the blades of these multimaster tools forces certain structural limitations on the blades used. Unlike the rotary motor of older or cheaper multipurpose power tools, the Fein Multimaster blade needs to be stiffer so that it can be vibrated at up to 21,000 oscillations per minute. This extra stiffness and other limits make the blades more fragile, wear out more quickly and more expensive to produce.
However, despite these design limitations, there are several ways to make the blades of your Fein power tools last longer. These tips also apply to other brands of multimaster tools. The first rule is to remember that Fein power tools are not meant for large volume jobs. For example, if you need to cut lots of wood, the Milwaukee Sawzall is almost always a better choice. Or if you need to cut a lot of holes in a lot of drywalls, you should be using the Bosch Rotozip spiral saw. Whenever there is a specialty tool available, use it, not the Fein Multimaster (Bosch Multi-X, Rockwell Sonicrafter, or Dremel Multi-Max).
The second important rule is to use the right blades or accessories. Too many people use only the carbide blade whenever they need to cut anything hard. However, sometimes you need something even harder - the diamond blade. And while the standard E-blade is a good general purpose blade, there are times you want to use the wood blade when you know you will not hit anything hard, or the HSS blade if you know there are a lot of nails or other metal bits embedded in the wood you are cutting. Fein makes many different blades for different purposes, so check the user manual or call their help line if you have any doubts.
The third rule is to use the right cutting technique. If you look at new power tool users (even regular power tools), they tend to apply too much pressure to the materials they are cutting. It almost seems like they are hammering a nail or chopping wood with an axe. Unfortunately, this is a habit that they never break. This is the sort of thing that quickly wears out blades. But when you look at a seasoned craftsman, whether amateur or professional, you can see that he is almost gentle in using his Fein power tool. He lets the multimaster blade work its own way through the material he is cutting, applying only enough force to control the direction of the cut.

Power Tool Accessories - Tips and Advice From a Serial Do-It-Yourselfer
Power tool accessories are often times confusing to many a new DIY'er,
but have no fear. In this brief article, we're going to discuss which
accessories you should consider buying and why power tools are one of
the most important weapons in your do-it-yourself arsenal.
In my opinion, power tools are a necessity for home improvement projects. There are no if's, and's, or but's about it. When I tackle a home renovation project, I typically find myself using circular saws, routers, sanders, and jigsaws the most. But what about accessories?
The first of the power tool accessories that we'll cover is a bit set. It's important that you have bits in all of the most commonly used sizes to complete various projects around the house. These are a must have.
Other important accessories are alignment tools such as dial indicators, planer pals, protractors, clamp guides, laser guides, and cutting guides. All of these will come in handy while you're trying to meet deadlines and produce a great looking finished project.
Lastly, when it comes to power tools or accessories, buy good stuff! Many DIY'ers make the mistake of buying cheap, "budget tools" that end up breaking soon after they're put to work. Resist the temptation to buy cheap power tools just because they're cheap. Always buy the best stuff that you can afford. Also, in addition to lasting longer, high-quality power tools are easier and safer to use. As my grandfather always said, "Buy it right, buy it once".
Hopefully this short article has given you some ideas on some power tool accessories. Take your time and purchase the best tools money can buy, you'll be much better off in the long-run as a result.

Cordless Power Tools - Making Any Home Improvement Job Easier
If you do much in the way of home repairs or projects then you know
firsthand just how important power tools are for getting the job done
much quicker. Today, cordless power tools not only get things done fast,
but also are much easier to use. Here's a look.
We all know the major advantages of powered tools over the older hand tools. They save the stress and strain of having to do everything manually. That's a major reason to use them right there.
While these tools have their advantages, they also have the disadvantage of having to rely on electricity for their power. You have to use an extension cord and have access to electrical outlets nearby in order to use them, which means if you need to have the power turned off in the home you can't use them. This also makes the possibility of accidents happening much greater since you can easily trip over cords or even have the risk of electrocution.
Cordless power tools are the solution to all of these issues since they use a battery pack to operate instead of electricity. This not only makes them much safer to use, but it makes them so much more convenient to use as well.
Some of the more popular cordless tools are your drills, jigsaws, circular saws and flashlights. Many manufacturers now package these all up and offer them as a complete tool kit. You will find all sorts of accessories in these kits as well as various volts being offered. The best advice here is to go with the larger 18 Volt models.
Although the big advantage with these tools is their convenience, they do have one downside so to speak; their batteries have to be recharged on a regular basis in order to operate. Naturally, all of the cordless power tool kits will include a battery and a charger. As long as you have them charged when you are ready to work you will not have to worry about running out of juice. Nothing is more aggravating than being in the middle of a project and having your drill run out of juice.
These are just a few of the many different reasons why cordless power tools are the only way to go. They are convenient, easy to use and make things a little less stressful on your body.

Buying Used Power Tools
Like any other kind of purchase, you'll get a better deal when you buy used power tools if you do a little research first.
Many people will head straight to eBay, find the first tool that looks more or less like what they want, then keep bidding until they win. This might get you a power tool quickly, but it won't necessarily get the best tool for the job, and it certainly won't get you the best price!
So how should you go about the task? Well, the first step is to identify the tool you want - the actual make and model. If for example, you are looking for a cordless drill, start by making a shortlist of drills that meet your specific criteria. Perhaps there are certain brands that you prefer, like Black & Decker or Hilti. Maybe you need a certain battery capacity. Make a list of your requirements, then find drills that match that list.
When making your shortlist, you should start by researching new tools. There's a much wider choice, and it's easy to get all the specifications you need on any new tool. Great sites for this kind of research are Amazon and Shopping.
Once you have a shortlist of power tools that meet your requirements, you next need to get an idea of the street price of those tools. The street price is not the same thing as the manufacturers recommended retail price, or RRP. The street price is the average price you would actually expect to pay for something, and is usually a fair bit lower than the RRP.
Knowing the street price is important, because many people selling used power tools will tell you how much you are saving compared to the RRP. But a comparison to the street price is much more useful to you, after all, you would never pay the RRP! You can get a good idea of the street price whilst researching new tools on amazon and other retail sites.
Now you have a shortlist of tools, and you know the best price you would pay for them if buying new, you are in a much stronger position to buy pre-owned tools. When you find a tool that's on your list, you can instantly see if the price is realistic. And because you know which tools meet your requirements, you won't waste time chasing power tools that will end up being sold on or discarded.

Power Tools - Increase the Life of Your Tools With Proper Maintenance
There are all kinds of things you can do with your own power tools. You
could build a birdhouse with your son, make some extra cash at a crafts
fair, remodel the bathroom or even build a detached garage. If you have
the desire, the proper skills and the right tools, you can do whatever
you imagination can come up with.
However, if you want to continue to make your fabulous projects or safely work on your remodeling, you have to take care of your investment. Power tools, quality ones, are not cheap, but they can last a lifetime if you take care of them. Here are a few basics on how to properly maintain your equipment and extend their use life:
1. Keep it clean.
Every time you use whatever kind of equipment, dirt and debris is created. If you are working with wood, sawdust goes everywhere and with metal, you have metal shavings that accumulate. This occurs whether you are cutting, drilling and certainly planning and sanding.
So, in between work, try to keep the debris under control and at the end of the workday, clean all the components of the power tool to make sure there is nothing that will damage the working parts if left unattended. Keep a shop vac and a hand held vacuum in your workshop to make sure you get all the hard to reach places. Sawdust and debris can clog up a motor or ruin a blade if you don't keep it clean.
2. Lubricate.
Once you've cleaned the debris away, oil the working parts to make sure they don't stick next time you try to use it. Just a dab at the point of friction should be enough for smooth action next time you use it.
3. Perform regular inspections.
Routinely check that all electrical cords for weak spots and cuts. If you have power tools with seals or gaskets, give these a once over every now and then to make sure they are still doing their job. Over time they may weaken and rot and need to be replaced.
4. Use a professional.
If your miter saw or other piece has a problem with the motor or some other component, it is best to take it to a professional for repair. Every now and then it may be necessary to have a complete overhaul of the motor, just like a car. This is for the more expensive big pieces. For smaller items like hand saws and drills, you want to weigh the cost of repair and replacement cost. You'll probably be better off buying a new one.
5. Take care when loaning equipment.
If you loan your stuff out to friends, make sure they know how to use the equipment and how to clean it. When it is returned to you, give the piece a once-over to make sure everything is still in proper working order.
Not only is proper maintenance essential for increasing the life span of your equipment, but it also ensures accurate performance. Some cuts and holes have to be exact and you only want to do it once. Proper maintenance of your power tools also makes them safer for you to use.

Energy Saving Power Tools
Visit any big box home store and it appears, this summer, power saving
power tools are all the rage. Replacing their gas powered counterparts,
these battery or propane operated lawn maintenance tools run on
alternative energy sources that both lower emissions and boast less
maintenance.
Some of this year's highlights include:
Ariens Co. of Brillion, Wis., has unveiled the $3,299 "AMP Rider" electric-motor mower, run by rechargeable lead-acid batteries and never needs an oil-change
Valley City, Ohio-based MTD Products Inc.'s Troy-Bilt brand has a $169 seven-pound lithium-ion battery trimmer that can run up to 45 minutes on a single charge.
No more annoying pumping with Frontgate's battery-powered sprayer that will disperse 18 gallons of liquid per single battery charge.
People-powered push mowers are returning with a vengeance. They have similar designs, but now promise to be quieter, easier to maneuver and lightweight. Some even include attachments for grass catchers.
Earthwise makes a cordless electric mower that provides the ease of operation of an electric mower without the cord. The rechargeable 24 V battery lasts up to 45 minutes. Their cordless chainsaw still requires oil, but it runs on an 18 volt NiCad battery that is compatible with other Earthwise 18 volt tools.
The RoboMower, running anywhere from $1000 to $3000 is a true energy saving device - cutting back on both fuel and people power.
Everyone has cordless power tools, but the most efficient are the ones that share a single 18V battery. This means you can use the same battery for all your lawn tools.
One of the most extensive versions of this is offered by Black & Decker who admits to having a bigger selection of cordless trimmers than the corded version. With one 18 V battery you can charge all your Black & Decker battery-operated tools which include surface sweepers, chainsaw, lopper, hedge trimmer, grass trimmer, cultivator, pruning saw, and power scrubber. All of these products boast: " No pull cords. No trips to the gas station. No gas or oil to mix. No gas to store or spill. No fumes. No tune-ups or maintenance."
According to Joe Newland, Black & Decker's product manager for outdoor products. "There are tradeoffs, and what you lose in power, you gain in convenience and weight." He mentions that these products are particularly popular with female users. "They don't want to start with filling it. They just want to use it."
From the numbers, the public is loving these products, and as they become more widespread, prices are coming down. Even the cost of solar lighting and batteries have seen large reductions from a few years ago. Home Depot reported 2008 a record year for non-gas outdoor power equipment. In addition to the regular electric and battery operated mowers, Home Depot sells a version that runs on a 16.4 ounce propane container.
Even heavy duty, gas tool manufacturers are jumping on the "alternative energy" bandwagon. Husqvarna has just unveiled a soil cultivator for $899 that runs off one large lead-acid battery. They have also introduced an "EcoSmart" campaign featuring similar products including their manual push mower and solar-battery robot "Automower".
The government is supporting this new, cleaner technology and incentives are being reviewed that would give consumers a 25% tax credit (up to $1000) toward their purchase of eco friendly lawn, garden or forestry power tools. In addition, the Environmental Protection Agency issued new rules that require manufacturers to reduce emissions from new lawn and garden equipment by 35% in the next few years. If these companies want to remain in business, they have to start examining new, alternative forms of energy.
Currently Husqvarna is testing a high-powered, battery push mower; and Arien plans to introduce a battery-powered snowblower this winter. However the general consensus in the industry is one of caution. No one is quick to unveil a product that may not have the power to do the job. "It's one of those things where we want to be careful," says Roger Phelps, Stihl's promotional communications manager. "One thing customers are demanding is for performance to still be there. It's cool to have a battery-operated mower, but if it only gets halfway across the yard, that's not very cool."

Replacing Power Tool Parts - Is it the Carbon Brush Or the Switch?
You are are in the middle of replacing your old windows. In the
excitement of your project, your power tool begins to run one minute,
only to shut off the next! One moment it's working fine, just like it
always did, and the next it is completely dead. You click the trigger a
few times and it's running again. What in the world is going on?
Chances are that you are not out of luck. There are clues which can help you find the problem. While many problems may cause intermittent tool operation, two of the most common failures are the switch and the carbon brushes.
The Switch
The switch usually sits behind the main trigger, controlling power flow from the wall to the tool. When a switch is worn out, it works less and less frequently. At first it works pretty much all of the time. Occasionally it may need to be clicked twice to start the tool. Over time, you may find yourself clicking the switch several times every time you start the tool. Of course, once the tool is running it works perfectly as long as you hold down the trigger. Don't throw that power tool away! You probably just need a new switch.
Carbon Brushes
Carbon brushes transfer power to the motor of your power tool. Carbon Brush problems are a little different from the switch. When carbon brushes become marginal, a power tool will begin to "cut out" while it's running. Sometimes you might tap or slap the tool to get it running again. The trigger starts the tool just fine, but it doesn't run well. This sort of symptom usually points to a carbon brush problem. You will want to inspect your carbon brushes before replacing them.
A worn out carbon brush will often have a small amount of carbon remaining, or it will be pitted or chipped.
If your carbon brushes are bad, it sometimes means that your power tool has bigger problems (like a worn out motor). Quite often though, a fresh pair of carbon brushes can get you working again.

What You Need to Know About Power Tool Use
It's been said by many that power tools are man's best friend. Powered
by a compressed air motor, gasoline engine, or electric motor, they can
be both stationary and portable. In this brief article, we'll be
discussing some important facts about power tools and how to use them
safely.
Believe it or not, power tools have been around for ages. The Lathe, one of the oldest power tools, was actually used by the ancient Egyptians. During the early revolution-era, there were many factories that had power tools which were driven by belts from overhead shafts. However, the main source of power was good old H2O (the water wheel and steam engine).
Tips for Using Power Tools Safely
While using power tools for home improvement projects is a lot of fun, it's important that care is taken to avoid injury. Whenever you are working with power tools, remember to wear safety gear. The most important accessories to wear include safety goggles, work gloves, and sometimes even hard hats or helmets. While you're not going to win any fashion awards while wearing this stuff, it'll keep you safe!
Also, it's a good idea to wear long sleeve pants, shirts, and steel toe boots. These may seem a bit overboard, but it's always wise to be safe instead of sorry.
Hopefully this brief article has given you some insights on how to use power tools safely. No matter how big or small the job, keeping yourself in one piece should always be the first thing on your mind.

How Power Tools Can Make Money For the Hobbyist Or Professional
Are you interested in making a little extra money or do you want to
start up your own business? You are a whiz when it comes to using power
tools, so what can you do with this talent? You have several options
depending on your time and skill level. What category do you fall in to?
Weekend Hobbyist
Do you like working with your hands and think you have a creative streak? You can make some spending money just by building crafts to sell at local and regional craft fairs. It can be as small as decorative bird houses or as big as a bench or hope chest. These projects will give you a chance to do something you love and make a little money too.
Wood-working Warrior
You're ambitions are a little more advanced than the hobbyist. You want to build a business that revolves around your skill as a wood-worker. Whether it's cabinets or furniture, you love cutting, sanding and staining wood. Power tools like a miter saw and table saw are essential to this endeavor.
Champion Contractor
You want the whole caboodle. You're good working with your hands but you can also delegate and instruct. As a contractor, you may be mostly an investor in power tools as opposed to the actual operator, but you like to get your hands dirty just the same. This is a huge step and takes time to build a business, but once you get a job or two, the referrals will start coming in and your investment will pay off. Once you've figured out your niche, there are some issues to consider if this venture is going to be profitable.
* Equipment:
Do you already have the power tools necessary or will they be part of the start-up cost? Can you afford the expensive pieces that are necessary for major projects? The hobbyist doesn't need to blow his budget with start-up costs and expensive equipment because it will take him a while to make back his investment.
* Space:
If you just like to play around on the weekends making wooden trinkets and other items for craft fairs, you probably won't need a whole lot of space. You might even be able to share the garage with the car. But, for the cabinet builder or the contractor, you will probably need an entire garage, if not more, just for your power tools and other equipment. For safety reasons, you need enough room to maneuver and use the equipment, plus you'll need storage.
* Time:
The hobbyist doesn't have to dedicate a lot of time, but to really make a go of your business, time is essential. If you are not ready or able to take the plunge full-time, do you have the resources to moon-light for awhile? Once you've built a client base and the referrals start coming in, you can afford to dedicate all of your time to the business.
Whichever category you fall in to, working with power tools can be a fun and creative outlet. If you can make some money doing what you are passionate about, then why not?

* Equipment:
Do you already have the power tools necessary or will they be part of the start-up cost? Can you afford the expensive pieces that are necessary for major projects? The hobbyist doesn't need to blow his budget with start-up costs and expensive equipment because it will take him a while to make back his investment.
* Space:
* Time:

Power Tool Battery Directory - NiCad, NiMH, and Li-Ion Batteries in Your Cordless Tools
It can be easy to dismiss the importance of a high-quality battery in
the functioning of your cordless tools. As it turns out, however, a good
battery is just as essential to a cordless tool as a healthy armature
or motor. Battery technology has significantly advanced since the
introduction of cordless power tools; since the development of the
Nickel Cadmium (NiCad), power tool batteries have evolved from NiCad to
Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH), and most recently to Lithium Ion (Li-Ion)
technology.
Nickel Cadmium batteries were the first on the market for cordless power tools and though the technology is older, it is still very reliable. NiCads are less sensitive to adverse temperatures and have a high recharge cycle, meaning they can be charged and recharged repeatedly for a long period of time. NiCads are also less expensive than NiMH and Li-Ion batteries. On the down-side, however, NiCads tend to suffer from battery memory effect. This occurs when a battery can no longer accept a complete charge because it had been repeatedly charged without first being fully depleted. It seems the battery "remembers" how much energy it has discharged, and only wants to accept back that much energy from charger. The element Cadmium is highly toxic making it the most harmful battery to the environment. The NiCad's negative effects on the environment, in fact, cause them to be heavily taxed outside the U.S.A. As a result, many European vendors won't sell NiCad batteries.
Nickel Metal Hydride batteries run on a higher amperage than NiCads, because of this, they also have a longer run-time. NiMHs are lighter than NiCads but they are far more sensitive to hot and cold temperatures, in fact, NiMH can't work in below freezing temperatures (32 degrees Fahrenheit and below) and they degrade very quickly in intensely high temperatures (105 degrees Fahrenheit an up). Although the NiMH has a longer run-time than the NiCad it doesn't accept as many charges. NiCad and NiMH batteries do have very similar overall lifespans but NiMH has a larger energy storage capacity.
Lithium Ion batteries have a higher energy density than most other rechargeable batteries. A high energy density means that the Lithium Ion has a superior energy to weight ratio storing more energy for their size than most other batteries. Li-Ions have a very slow self-discharge rate meaning they retain their charge for much longer. Most rechargeable batteries significantly deplete as they are disengaged, the slow rate of charge-loss in Li-Ions, however, allows them to maintain most of their charge for longer periods, even on a shelf in your shop or garage.
There are many benefits to working with Lithium Ion batteries from their light-weight, to their long run-time. Li-Ions maintain their charge for much longer and have continuous max power throughout their energy discharge cycle. Other batteries consistently lose power as you work. Li-Ions are light-weight, and have a huge storage capacity, this means you now have a lighter, more efficient and powerful battery without the bulk. Lithium Ion batteries are by a landslide the least detrimental to our environment, and for many reasons they are the favorite of most craftsmen.
There are, however, some disadvantages to Lithium Ion batteries. Li-Ions are a bit more expensive. The complexities of production (in circuitry) accounts for this price difference. Each Li-Ion also requires a specifically built charger to accommodate that type of battery; this means that chargers are more expensive as well, and aren't universal to all types of Li-Ion batteries. The Li-Ion has a built-in chip that protects the battery from over and undercharging, and ensures it has a longer life. This computer chip, however, doesn't allow the battery to continue accepting charge once its energy level has dropped below a certain point. Once this happens the battery is essentially dead. Li-Ions also rely on this circuit to stay cool. Since Li-Ions lose charge so slowly, and the battery and charger communicate so well together, it's fairly simple to keep Lithium Ions temperate and at a safe charge level.
Remember, the quality of the battery you use is just as important as the quality of your power tool. The battery gives the right amounts of energy and finesse to your tools and their working parts.
